Japan and Korea AISIs hold First Joint Technical Workshop
The AI Safety Institute of Japan and the Republic of Korea held its first joint technical workshop on AI safety with over two days, Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9, 2026.

Overview
The workshop aimed to strengthen ties between the AI safety research and engineering communities in Japan and Korea and to lay the foundation for ongoing information sharing and collaboration.

A total of 30 researchers, engineers, and other representatives from the two AISIs participated in the workshop and exchanged views on areas of mutual interest in AI safety.
In addition to deepening their understanding of each organization’s activities and approaches, participants engaged in lively discussions on evaluation methods that take multilingual and multicultural factors into account, initiatives to improve AI safety in various fields, and AI security. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for Japan and Korea to develop a shared understanding of common challenges and deepen mutual understanding.

Main Sessions and Discussions

Day 1: Overview of Each AISI’s Activities and Presentations on Pilot Projects and Evaluation Methodologies
The first day began with opening remarks by Secretary-General and Deputy Director Nishimura of Japan AISI, followed by an exchange of information on the overall activities and future goals of the two countries’ AISIs. The Korea AISI first presented its initiatives on AI safety policy research, as well as evaluation of AI models and systems. The Japan AISI then gave presentations focusing on key areas of its business demonstration projects, including healthcare, robotics, conformity assessment, and data strategy.
During the Q&A sessions, participants discussed technical issues and asked questions aimed at better understanding the background to each country’s initiatives, the involvement of relevant stakeholders, and their respective approaches.

Day 2: Discussions on Model Evaluation and AI Security
The second day focused more closely on model evaluation. Following presentations by Japan AISI on JAI-Trust, a project to develop benchmarks for the safety and security of generative AI in Japan, participants from both countries discussed evaluations that take multilingual and multicultural factors into consideration.
Regarding AI security, the Korea AISI shared its work on multimodal red teaming. Experts from Japan and Korea then exchanged views on their respective initiatives and recent challenges in the field.

The two-day workshop concluded successfully with closing remarks by Japan AISI Deputy Director Hiramoto.
